Counting Forward from 0 to 120

Counting forward builds number sense and helps students understand how numbers increase in order. Practicing beyond 100 strengthens fluency and prepares students for place value understanding.

Counting Practice:
  • Start at 0 and count forward by ones to 120.
  • Pause at points such as 50, 75, and 100 to reinforce larger milestones.
  • Use a number chart to point and track while saying each number aloud.
Teaching Tip

Encourage students to practice in short sets (0–30, 31–60, 61–90, 91–120) to build stamina and accuracy without feeling overwhelmed.

Number Sequences and Missing Numbers

Recognizing number sequences helps students identify the order of numbers and strengthens their ability to find what comes before or after in counting.

Sequence Activities:
  • Fill in missing numbers: 47, 48, __, 50.
  • Identify what comes before and after a number, such as before 72 and after 72.
  • Skip around the chart: ask students to continue counting starting at different numbers, like 36 or 89.
Helpful Strategy

Cover parts of the number chart and let students predict the missing numbers. This builds confidence in recognizing sequences without always relying on a full chart.

Connecting Numbers and Words

Writing numbers as both numerals and words reinforces the understanding that numbers can be represented in multiple ways and helps prepare for problem-solving with word problems.

Practice Ideas:
  • Match 56 with the word fifty-six.
  • Write 100 as β€œone hundred.”
  • Say a number aloud, such as seventy-four, and write 74.
Instructional Focus

Provide both numeral and word cards during practice. This helps students flexibly recognize numbers across different formats.

Counting Patterns

Patterns in counting allow students to skip-count and see groups of numbers, an important step toward multiplication and problem-solving strategies.

Pattern Practice:
  • Count by 1s from 0 to 120.
  • Count by 5s: 0, 5, 10, 15 … up to 120.
  • Count by 10s: 0, 10, 20, 30 … up to 120.
Visual Strategy

Highlight every fifth or tenth number on the chart. This helps students clearly see the repeating pattern and predict the next numbers more easily.
